MEDIA ADVISORY

Under Banner of ‘Jobs Not Cuts,’ State and National Organizations Call On Congress to Reject Austerity and Invest In Job Creation

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 8 a.m., grassroots leaders from AL, IA, IL, ME, MN, MO, MT, NH, OH and VA will join with the Campaign for Community Change, Social Security Works and Health Care for America Now to protest at the “Fixing the Debt: Reforming the Tax Code and Federal Health Spending” conference being held at the Grand Hyatt Washington, 1000 H Street, NW.

Operating under the name “Fix the Debt,” a group of more than 90 CEOs is pushing an austerity agenda aimed at middle-class programs while shielding millionaires, billionaires and big corporations from necessary tax increases. In a Nov. 25 appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, a charter member of Fix the Debt, Honeywell CEO David Cote, said, “We have a significant problem with entitlements, Medicare and Medicaid in particular.” He was an odd choice as spokesman: according to a recent report by the Institute for Policy Studies (http://www.ips-dc.org/reports/pension-deficit-disorder), Cote has retirement assets of more than $78 million and his company’s employee pension plan is underfunded by $2.8 billion.

What: America needs right now are more jobs – quality jobs that pay living wages, guarantee the right to collectively bargain and organize, and are accessible to the people looking for work right now.
